TURA, Dec 5: World Soil Day was on Sunday celebrated by KVK, Tura under the theme ‘Halt Soil Salinization, Boost Soil Productivity’ at its training hall in Tura where altogether 45 participants attended.
Charles M Sangma, National Executive Member, Kisan Morcha, Meghalaya, who was the chief guest on the occasion, spoke on the importance of soil management and said that utmost importance should be given by farmers to make their soil fertile. He stressed upon low soil fertility status, low yield of crops and less vegetable production in Garo Hills even as he requested farmers to participate in training programmes and other demonstrations conducted by agriculture and allied departments.
Earlier, the programme began with a welcome speech by Dr. Joyoshree Mahanta, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK, Tura where she emphasised on the importance of World Soil Day celebration and theme of the year. She stressed upon the unbalanced use of manures and fertilizers in the soil by the tribal farmers of Garo Hills pointing out its hazardous impact and how to overcome it using bio-fertilizer and organic fertilizers. She also explained about the salt accumulation and its hazards in soil.
Dimsrang Sangma, a representative from IBDLP, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya shared his experience about the nutrient status of degraded soils and mining areas where none of the agricultural crops are grown.
