JOWAI: The Government Lower Primary School at Lapangap village bordering Assam reportedly remains closed since February last denying the right of the children to education.

The only school in the village inhabited by more than 1500 residents has created inconvenience to parents who want to send their children to school.

“We have lodged several complaints with the Director, Education Department and also with the local MLA Sniawbhalang Dhar but till date the school has remained closed”, said a village elder who did not want to be named.

He informed that the school has remained closed since the beginning of the current academic session soon after the retirement of a lone teacher of the institute.

Earlier, the government had appointed two assistant teachers of the school but Hendry Lamin the then local MLA transferred one of the teachers to Mukroh village. Hence the school had only the lone teacher left and he too retired in December last year.

“Soon after his retirement the school was closed as the government and the concerned department failed to appoint a new teacher,” the village elder said.

The village authority has demanded immediate appointment of a new teacher to resume the smooth functioning of the government LP School.

“Its a great loss to our children and if the government fails to appoint a new teacher our children will be denied of their right to education”, said the village elder.
