SHILLONG, Feb 1: In a bid to educate voters, the HYC will launch its political awareness campaign titled ‘Rai Eh Daw Campaign’ under the theme “Elect with Responsibility”.
HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin told reporters here on Wednesday that the campaign will be launched at Mothpran on February 6 with objective of educating the voters on the need to elect the right people in the February 27 Assembly elections.
“It is important to elect leaders who are committed to install a corruption-free and responsible government in the best interest of the people of the state,” Kharjahrin said.
According to him, political leaders have become stand-up comedians for misusing political platforms. “What is sad is that election campaigns are akin to comedy and there is nothing serious,” he said.
The right to vote, Kharjahrin said, is not merely the right to exercise their franchise on the voting day. “It is the duty of every electorate to choose a candidate who are not just mere politicians but statesmen, who are policy makers. People should not elect businessmen. But I would say that there are some businessmen who contribute to the society. However, many join politics to serve their business interest,” he said.
Moreover, HYC members will be travelling to various parts of the state to educate and sensitise people on electing quality leaders. “We will not campaign against or for the present government but we will remind and educate our people on the failure of various state governments to fulfill the demands of the public, especially on issues pertaining to the welfare of our indigenous community” he added.
Kharjahrin also advised electorates not to fall prey to lies or accept money from candidates and political parties on the voting day. “Election is not a festival of freebies where people get free booze or free food,” he said.
Kharjahrin clarified that the HYC is not targeting any political party who are part of the ruling MDA coalition. “We are neither pro-party nor anti-party,” the HYC chief said.
