BSF personnel confiscate 13,000 kg sugar

SHILLONG, May 15: The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya on Tuesday seized 13,000 kg sugar and apprehended two Indian nationals near Kuliang bordering area in East Jaintia Hills district.
According to a statement, based on a tip-off, the BSF troops launched an operation and later intercepted a vehicle loaded with sugar, which was reportedly meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh.
The vehicle, which had come from Kalain under Cachar district of Assam, was headed towards Kuliang bordering area.
“Upon questioning, the driver and co-driver failed to produce any valid documents pertaining to the consignment of sugar,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, both apprehended persons have been identified as Rahimuddin from Karimganj district and Tazimul Hussain from Cachar district of Assam.
In a separate operation, BSF troops deployed at MCP Sonapur intercepted two light vehicles loaded with six cattle intended for smuggling to Bangladesh.
The driver of one vehicle, however, managed to flee the scene, while the other was apprehended by BSF troops.
Meanwhile, the seized sugar and cattle, and the apprehended persons have been handed over to the Umkiang Police Station for further legal proceedings.
