SHILLONG, Sep 21: As political opposition grows over the extension of the tenures of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Congress leader and MDC Ronnie V Lyngdoh has voiced support for a delimitation exercise, stating it is essential for balancing voter representation in constituencies.
Lyngdoh, who serves as an MDC in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and is part of the NPP-led executive committee, emphasized the need for delimitation, noting that some constituencies have disproportionately large voter bases while others have very few.
It may be mentioned that the state government recently extended the terms of the KHADC and JHADC by another six months, from September 5, 2024, to March 5, 2025, following a similar extension earlier this year, in order to enable the councils to carry out delimitation of their constituencies.
However, the decision has been met with sharp criticism from the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP), which accused the state government of using the extension as a tactic to delay elections, allegedly out of fear of losing to the VPP.
