NONGPOH, April 19: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Saturday accentuated the need to preserve ancestral narratives, customs and cultural heritage as he unveiled a memorial stone in honour of Pa’iem Chak Syiem, a legendary warrior and the fourth traditional chief of Raid Nongtluh, during a ceremony held in Iew Umden, Ri-Bhoi district.
The memorial, erected by the Syiem clan within the compound of the Raid Nongtluh Syiem’s office, marks a significant tribute to the late chief who ruled from 1858 to 1859. Though his reign lasted only a year, oral tradition recounts his courageous leadership in repelling an invasion by forces from Raid Thaiang—a feat that earned him lasting reverence as a defender of the land.
The ceremony was attended by Pa’iem Vincent E. Syiem, present Syiem of Raid Nongtluh, along with clan elders, youth, women and members of the Syiem lineage.
Addressing the gathering, Nongpoh MLA, who is himself a member of the Syiem clan, hailed the unveiling as a milestone in preserving the oral history of Raid Nongtluh.
Underscoring the importance of documenting such histories to ensure they endure for future generations and are eventually codified under the jurisdiction of the District Council, he said, “Let this be a reminder to not only the people of Raid Nongtluh but to all Raids that it is time to preserve our ancestral narratives, our customs, our cuisine, attire, and rituals through proper documentation.”
Meanwhile, in a heartfelt message to the youths, the Nongpoh MLA urged them to pursue a path rooted in humility, diligence and obedience.
“These are the guiding principles that will elevate you in society,” he said, cautioning against harmful addictions and encouraging young people to live a life guided by values and respect for both humanity and the divine.
The occasion was also marked by the felicitation of young achievers from the community who have excelled in education, sports and other domains.
