Shillong, Sep 11: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma justified the Meghalaya Education Grant (MEG) scheme, stating that the government is engaging in dialogue with schools, teachers, and communities to seek improvements in the education sector.
The ultimate goal is not just to improve pass percentages but to nurture responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to society, he said.
This comes at a time when several teachers’ organisations are opposing the proposed MEG scheme, fearing it could threaten the job security of deficit and ad-hoc teachers in upper primary schools. Teachers’ associations have staged rallies, and its potential impact on their livelihoods, arguing the government should focus on their welfare instead.
Speaking during a felicitation programme, Sangma acknowledged the challenges facing the education sector and thanked the All Meghalaya Upper Primary and Secondary Deficit Pattern School Teachers’ Association for its appreciation gesture.
Sangma highlighted the passion of Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma and Commissioner & Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri, both of whom had chosen to work in the education sector out of dedication. He assured continued government pursuit of solutions and reminded teachers of their vital role in shaping future leaders.
The programme was proof of shared responsibility between the government and educators, he said, emphasising that teaching is not just about instruction but about inspiring and uplifting society.
