SHILLONG, Sep 20: Education Minister and Amlarem legislator Lahkmen Rymbui handed over a work order worth Rs 9 lakh for the expansion of Darrang Secondary School, a move that his party colleagues in the War Jaintia Circle of the United Democratic Party (UDP) have hailed as a sign of renewed political weight for the region.
According to details, Rs 5 lakh has been sanctioned for constructing additional classrooms while another Rs 4 lakh will go towards procuring computers.
The formal handing over took place during a function that also witnessed the inauguration of a 205-metre suspension footbridge across the Umngot River, a project sanctioned under the Border Areas Development Programme (BADP) of 2019–2020.
Meanwhile, the War Jaintia Circle Unit of the UDP described Rymbui’s re-induction into the MDA-2 Cabinet led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as a timely boost for War Jaintia. They conveyed their gratitude to the government for bringing him back into the fold, saying this ensures the region has a stronger voice in the corridors of power. The minister has resumed charge of Education, Revenue & Disaster Management, Information & Public Relations, and Law departments.
Party leaders stressed that his return to the Cabinet would open doors for new schemes and development works, not only for War Jaintia but for the entire state.
UDP adviser K Pohshna, along with supporters from the 7-Amlarem constituency, extended wishes for Rymbui’s good health, expressing hope that he would use the opportunity to strengthen the Sub Division’s standing.
It was also underlined that Amlarem, one of the oldest Sub Divisions in Meghalaya, is poised to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and Rymbui’s ministerial responsibilities should translate into visible progress for the area.
