SHILLONG, Nov 19: The Joint Action Committee Movement of Mawkynrew Constituency (JACMMC) on Wednesday organised a rally to condemn the alleged murder of Bhim Sing Lyngdoh Nongbri of Madan Langning, Mawpyrshong.
Libokstar Suting, accused of killing Nongri on November 9, surrendered at the Madanriting Police Station on the same day.
According to reports, Nongbri sustained grievous injuries to his stomach, chest, and head. Speakers at the rally recounted how he was allegedly dragged out of his home and killed in full public view, as his 20-year-old daughter watched helplessly.
His son also sustained injuries on his hand while trying to save his father.
Members from various organisations, including FKJGP Mawkynrew Circle, KSU Mawkynrew Circle, HYC Mawkynrew Circle, schoolchildren, and residents of neighbouring villages, participated in the rally. The march from Khim Kharai to Lhon was also a protest against the illegal sale of liquor in the area.
Speaking to reporters, JACMMC president Harkin Warjri said the committee stands firmly with the bereaved family.
He expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that such violent acts are unprecedented in the area.
Warjri said that the committee intends to send a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated. He added that the committee will follow up on the matter with the police and district administration to ensure safety and security in the region.
JACMMC working president Olet Kharsahnoh demanded the harshest punishment for the accused, stating that he should be “hanged till death” for committing the murder.
Kharsahnoh also urged the government to support the victim’s family, including his 12 children, most of whom are minors.
Highlighting the absence of local governance in Madan Langning, Kharsahnoh said the lack of a Sordar has contributed to growing lawlessness. He urged the Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Balajied Syiem, to appoint a Sordar by December.
After the rally, the JACMNC members met the victim’s wife and extended financial assistance to the family.
Concerns over the proliferation of such outlets were earlier raised in a letter by the FKJGP Mawpyrshong Unit to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner on November 13. The organisation highlighted increasing disturbances and insecurity among the residents, particularly women and children, who reportedly feel unsafe moving around the locality.
The FKJGP stated that the absence of a Sordar or proper village administration has weakened law and order, contributing to the November 9 incident. The organisation has urged the district administration to enforce regulations strictly and restore peace in the area.
