MAWKYRWAT, Dec 3: Community organisations in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, publicly destroyed a massive haul of illegal alcohol on Wednesday after seizing 800 boxes (2,075 bottles) of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and 500 liters of illicit liquor during raids in October and November 2025.
The seizures were carried out by the Seng Longkmie Mawkyrwat, Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat, Village Defense Party (VDP) Mawkyrwat, and the Dorbar Shnong of Mawkyrwat. The confiscated liquor, intended for illegal sale in the Mawkyrwat Market, was poured out today at a site known as Jakar, Mawkyrwat.
The destruction was followed by a meeting attended by Superintendent of Police B Jyrwa, Mawkyrwat Myntri RR Lyngkhoi, headmen from 12 local villages, and office bearers from the involved community groups.
Representatives of the community groups issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal liquor trade, stressing that stern action would be taken against anyone continuing such activities, which they said bring “all kinds of evils” to society. They clarified that their aim is to eradicate social problems, particularly those stemming from alcohol and drug abuse.
Kitborsing Lyngdoh, President of the Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat, informed attendees that the groups’ office bearers have recently received threatening calls from unknown numbers, suspected to be from the illegal liquor sellers.
Lyngdoh stated that they were not deterred by the threats and warned that any attack on the leaders of the Seng Longkmie, Seng Samla, or VDP would be met with “stern action” by the youth of Mawkyrwat village, in collaboration with enforcement agencies.
Lyngdoh also noted with regret that most youths leaving rehabilitation centers have started selling drugs in and around Mawkyrwat, requesting law enforcement authorities to address this critical issue immediately.
In response, B Jyrwa, Superintendent of Police for South West Khasi Hills, promised full cooperation from the police department. He instructed the village authorities to provide the phone numbers of those making threats so that necessary legal action could be swiftly pursued.
