KOLKATA, Dec 10: A PIL was filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on the construction of a Babri Masjid-style mosque in Murshidabad by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir.
The petitioner argued that the mosque could disrupt communal harmony, cause social unrest, and violate fundamental rights under Articles 14, 21, and 25.
Kabir, suspended from the party on December 4 for anti-party activities, laid the foundation stone for the mosque on December 6 and plans to begin construction in February, preceded by a mass Quran recital.
The petitioner also questioned how Kabir is proceeding without district administration permission.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee condemned communal politics, emphasizing that Murshidabad, with its rich historical and religious heritage, would not accept politics that incite riots, reiterating her party’s stance against communalism.
The court is expected to hear the matter next week. (IANS)
