SHILLONG, Dec 24: The much-awaited four-lane bridge connecting Garo Hills with Assam, expected to be a game-changer for the region, is 65 per cent complete, with the project set to take another three years to finish.
In its project updates, the NHIDCL stated that the physical progress of the 19.28-km four-lane bridge construction stands at 65 per cent.
The project includes approaches over the River Brahmaputra between Dhubri (on the North Bank, Assam) and Phulbari (on the South Bank, Meghalaya) on NH-127B, funded under JICA ODA loan assistance. The project was awarded in November 2020, with an amount of Rs 4,997 crore earmarked for it. The financial progress of the project currently stands at 64%.
Executed by Larsen & Toubro Ltd, the original date of completion is set for September 2028. It is expected that the under-construction bridge will bring huge economic benefits to Garo Hills, especially the Phulbari area, besides improving connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya.
