SHILLONG, Feb 16: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the first day of the Budget session on Monday paid tribute to former five-time Chief Minister DD Lapang and 17 other leaders who passed away recently.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, in his obituary reference, described Lapang as a mentor and statesman who touched the lives of every member of the House. Recalling Lapang’s contributions to his constituency, the Ri-Bhoi district, and the state, Sangma noted that the veteran leader retained a “spark” even in his advanced years. Lapang passed away at the age of 91 after an illustrious political career.
The chief minister also remembered late RA Lyngdoh, a former minister and Sohiong legislator, who passed away at the age of 80.
Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma recalled how Lapang would lead the House in prayer before embarking on new initiatives. He described him as a leader who sought justice for the people and possessed the “art of accommodation.” He specifically noted Lapang’s rare willingness to groom and nurture his successors.
Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem and Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar also shared how they were mentored by the late leader, highlighting his readiness to serve the public even at an old age.
Speaker Thomas Sangma stated that Dr. DD Lapang rose above economic hardships through determination and integrity. Recalling his vast contributions to governance, the Speaker noted that he personally learned much from Lapang, who had received numerous honours from prestigious institutions.
The House observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect for the 18 departed souls.
