TURA: Unidentified militants have shot dead a man and dumped his body next to the National Highway passing through Bajengdoba area of North Garo Hills district on Monday night.

Bajengdoba police rushed to the spot after being alerted by villagers about a body of a middle aged man lying on the side of NH-51 at village Chenggalma, near Dinok market early Tuesday morning.

The 50-55 year old victim, identified to be a non-tribal, had a bullet wound on his head. He was left on the road with a pair of sun goggles covering his eyes and a woolen cap on the head. No message or note was left behind by the killers.

The Garo militants, specially the GNLA usually leave behind a note on the body of their victim giving reasons for the slaying but, have also been shy from doing so when it came to ransom.

North Garo Hills police have so far not been able to identify the victim because there has been no report or case of missing person or abduction in the district since the last two months.

However, unconfirmed reports mention that the body could be that of a muslim trader who was kidnapped by armed militants from Rongrong market a few weeks ago. His whereabouts have remained unknown so far. Rongrong falls under East Garo Hills but is adjacent to the North Garo Hills district.

Besides holding meetings with officials, he might meet representatives of political parties to know their grievances in the run up to the election process.

Jindal said he would hold separate meetings with authority concerned for all the eight districts to take note of the overall election preparations.

“We have already asked all DROs, SPs and EROs to remain ready for the meetings with the Dy. EC”, he said. All the ten Expenditure Observers arrived here to keep close eye on the expenditure by different political parties and their aspirants. To ensure peaceful election, the additional companies of Central Para Military Forces (CPMF) have started arriving here.

So far, 44 companies of CPMF have arrived to perform poll related duties.

Though they are meant for performing election related duties, state police has been using additional forces in different purpose, said a top police office.

Pak Interior Minister apologises to Christians

Islamabad: Days after he angered Christians by comparing fiery cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri to the Pope, Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik met a delegation of the minority community’s leaders and extended “heart-felt apologies” for hurting their feelings by his “uncalled for” remarks.

Malik invited a delegation of Christian leaders led by National Supreme Council of Bishops Chairman Ishaq Mazhar Sandhu to his office on Monday and formally apologised for his remarks.

He contended he had made the remarks unintentionally and in the “heat of the moment.”

Malik, known for his penchant for making off-the-cuff statements, had earned the ire of Christians by comparing Qadri to the Pope last week during the firebrand cleric’s anti-government protest. “I assure you gentlemen that I had no intentions to hurt anybody’s religious feelings and whatever happened was absolutely unintended, though uncalled for.

“I myself received my early education in missionary schools and I respect not only Christians for their faith and beliefs but all the religions of the world and their followers, as that is the basic teaching of Islam,” Malik was quoted as saying by the media.

He extended his “heart-felt apologies” to the minority Christian community for hurting their feelings. “I hope you will understand the situation and accept my apology,” he said.

Sandhu, who was accompanied by pastors Patras Salamat and Mushtaque Hakim, accepted Malik’s apology. (PTI)

Freida: hottest Indian chick

Slumdog Millionaire star

Freida Pinto has been crowned the ‘Hottest Indian Chick’ in GQ magazine’s US edition.

The publication has become embroiled in a racism row after it included a series of new race-specific categories to its “100 Sexiest Women of the 21st Century” poll, the Daily Mail reported.

Critics have slammed the lads’ glossy for suggesting some women “are only attractive in the context of their own ethnicity” after awarding titles for ‘Sexiest Chinese Chick’, ‘Sexiest Indian Chick’ and, most tenuous of all, ‘Sexiest Pregnant Sri Lankan’.

Ziyi Zhang was named ‘Hottest Chinese Chick’ while the somewhat dubious title of ‘Hottest Pregnant Sri Lankan’ went to British rapper M.I.A.

However, Critics argue that while there is nothing wrong in principle with saying somebody is an “attractive Chinese or Indian woman”, singling some out for their ethnic roots and others not suggests they “are not beautiful simply because they are beautiful… but are only attractive in the context of their own ethnicity.” For example, while Pinto was crowned ‘Hottest Indian Chick’, there is no mention of Beyonce’s African-American heritage, Mila Kunis’ Ukranian roots or Kim Kardashian’s Armenian ancestry. Sasha’s mighty yawn goes viral

0

New York: While millions of eyes were trained on her Big Daddy as he delivered his inauguration speech, the young Sasha Obama was briefly caught on the wrong foot — giving out a big yawn in the middle of the address — an image that has now gone viral on social networking sites.

All of 11, the youngest Obama sat through the President’s nearly 20 minutes address with her 14-year-old elder sister Malia and their mother Michelle, clapping and cheering in between the address. But as her father talked about the importance of moving ahead as one nation in his address after being sworn in for a second term as US President, Sasha let out a big yawn.

Cameras panned over to Sasha, her sister and mother and captured her yawning and clapping.

The image of the young Obama, wearing a blue overcoat and gloves, and yawning has gone viral on the Internet with micro-blogging sites abuzz with posts of adoration for the display of normalcy from the First Daughter during one of the most important and closely-watched moments for her President father.

A Twitter post read, “In today’s news, Sasha Obama yawns a ginormous yawn during her dad’s speech. #weunderstand #neverliveitdown.” Another netizen said, “Best part of the inauguration: Sasha’s GIANT “Dad you’re boring me “yawn,” while a separate message posted on the micro-blogging site said, “Sasha’s yawn was priceless” and “Sasha just let out a big yawn during her fathers speech notoriously funny. Stealing the show yet again.” (PTI)

ULFA attacks police station, jawan injured

Guwahati: A policeman was injured and a police station was damaged when militants belonging to the utlawed United Liberation Font of Assam (ULFA), anti-talks faction, launched an attack on Namtola police station in Sonari sub-division of Sivasagar district of Assam bordering Nagaland late Monday night.

Police informed that suspected ULFA militants taking advantage of darkness sprayed bullets at the police station for about half an hour leaving a commando jawan injured besides causing damage to police station’s property including vehicles.

The militants lobbed a powerful grenade at the police station. But it missed the target and fell at a stranded truck causing a huge fire. Three vehicles parked inside the police station campus due to the attack.

Later top ranked police officials were rushed to the spot to launch a combing operation.

Security forces have cordoned off the entire area and have launched a combing operation to nab the ULFA men involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, the banned ULFA in a statement issued on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was in retaliation to killing of an innocent Assamese youth, Lalit Moran, by the Army in coordination with Assam Police in a ‘fake encounter’ at Kakojan in Tinsukia district of Assam on the night of January 21 last.

The ULFA faction warned that more such attacks would be launched on Assam Police personnel if they did not stop coordinating with the Indian Army in killing ‘innocent Assamese youth’.
