‘Making scary family movies is fine’

Filmmaker Tim Burton says it is fine to make his family

films scary. The 54-year-old director, whose latest

animated adventure “Frankenweenie” has some frightening scenes, said that he loved watching monster films when he was young, reported Contactmusic.

However, the filmmaker, who has children Billy, eight, and Nell, four, with partner Helena Bonham Carter, said that he is sometimes shocked by the content of children’s stories when he reads with his kids.

“I’ve always felt kids are their own best barometer of what they can take. My little girl is four and when we read fairytales, even I’m a bit shocked,” he said

“Fairytales are pretty hardcore, but they’re also a way of kids exploring things like death without it being too traumatic. What fascinates me more is that parents forget all that,” he added. (PTI)

Child dead, 15 injured in Pak blast

Islamabad: A child was killed and 15 others, including four policemen, were injured when a bomb attached to a bicycle went off at a crowded market in Quetta city of southwest Pakistan on Monday, officials said.

Lady Gaga’s restaurant smacked for its filthy habits

The high-end Manhattan restaurant owned

by pop star Lady Gaga and her family has been hit with a number of violations by the Department of Health.

Joanne Trattoria on the city’s West Side restaurant was smacked with a shameful ‘C’ grade, the lowest possible rating, after health officials uncover its filthy habits, reported Daily Mail online.

Any restaurant racking up 28 or more violation points gets stamped with a ‘C’ and Gaga’s was found to have a staggering 42, six of them ‘critical’.

According to the report published by the Smoking Gun, the clean team visited the restaurant, run by Gaga’s parents Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta, on October 2.

The Gotham eatery first fell foul (literally) of health standards less than one month after its launch in February, scoring a boarder-line ‘C’ with 31 violations.

Now, the health officials discover that the restaurant has no hand-wash basins in staff toilets.

“Hand washing facility not provided in or near food preparation area and toilet room,” the report reads. “Hot and cold running water at adequate pressure to enable cleanliness of employees not provided at facility. Soap and an acceptable hand-drying device not provided,” it added.

Other health crimes committed by Joanne’s included staff wearing filthy clothing and no hair nets.

Surfaces were left unwashed, officials found, food not protected from contamination and kitchen workers abandoned utensils in favour of their hands.

Also in the news, angry fans booed Lady Gaga on Sunday night after she arrived over an hour late for a public appearance in London and then dashed indoors before many had even caught a glimpse of her.

Hundreds of screaming fans crammed the streets around luxury department store Harrods ahead of the UK launch of her new perfume, Lady Gaga Fame.

But many were left disappointed after she refused to walk the full length of a specially themed black carpet, and then went inside before some had caught sight of her, leading to a chorus of boos. (Agencies)

Maldivian former president held

Male: Maldivian opposition leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed was arrested Monday following a court order, a party official said. According to the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), Nasheed was arrested and taken away by police while participating in a political rally on an island, Xinhua reported. Nasheed is the MDP’s presidential candidate.

A local court Sunday issued a warrant to arrest Nasheed over a case filed by the family of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed, who was arrested and detained when Nasheed was the country’s president.

The MDP alleged that the court order was politically motivated to invalidate Nasheed’s candidacy for the elections scheduled to be held next year and to deliberately disrupt the party’s presidential campaign. The Maldives government, however, denied any political hand in the court order and said it was purely based on a case filed by an individual.

It also concluded that the transfer of power to then vice president Mohamed Waheed was “legal and constitutional” and that Nasheed’s resignation was voluntary without any coercion or intimidation. (IANS)

Windies outwit host Lanka

First World Cup win since 1979

COLOMBO: West Indies were crowned the World Twenty20 champions after beating hosts Sri Lanka by 36 runs in a bowler-dominated final here on Sunday.

Sri Lanka restricted West Indies to 137 for six wickets to boost their chances of winning their maiden World Twenty20 title but the dream did not materialise as they were shot out for 101 runs.

Chasing a seemingly modest victory target, Sri Lanka were going steadily at 48 for one before their batting order caved in, partially because of their anxiousness to stay ahead of the par score in case of a rain interruption which seemed so imminent.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene (33) and Kumar Sangakkara (22) got the starts but could not carry on and only one more Sri Lankan – Nuwan Kulasekara (26) – managed double figures in an otherwise abject batting capitulation.

Spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, claiming 3-9 to cap his excellent run in the tournament.

Windies captain Darren Sammy won the toss but was left to rue his decision to bat first as the Sri Lankan bowlers stifled his batsmen, restricting a side teeming with big-hitters to 32-2 after 10 overs.

Spinner Ajantha Mendis (4-12) broke West Indies’ back but Marlon Samuels hit a 56-ball 78 to prove that the hosts were not really unplayable as West Indies recovered somewhat to post 137 for six. Samuels was also Man-of-the-Match.

Down the order, Sammy chipped in with an unbeaten 26 off 15 balls to give some respectability to the total.

Despite some last-minute heroics from Kulasekara, the Lankan batting was listless, ultimately leaving the home crowd heart-broken.

Sammy dedicated their triumph to fans back home and said it is a step in the “right direction” and will usher in a new beginning for cricket in the Caribbean islands.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us. The tournament is for the fans. The Caribbean people wanted this. This moment we’re going to live forever. We went through a lot in the last two years,” Sammy said at the post-match presentation ceremony here.

“I can’t say we are back but this is a step in the right direction,” he added.

Jayawardene quits T20 captaincy

Jayawardene said it was just a matter of a few overs in between which made all the difference in the end.

“I think the first 10 overs were fantastic, they knew they had to go for it. A couple of mistakes on the field and three-four bad overs shifted the momentum. It was tough for us to get into it,” Jayawardene said.

“The boys tried well but we’re disappointed we could not win in front of the crowd. Marlon batted very well.”

Jayawardene had bigger news later on when he announced that he was quitting as Sri Lankan T20 captain, hoping that someone younger can be groomed for the role. He will remain ODI and Test captain until at least December.

In a bit of an anti-climax, Shane Watson was named Man-of-the-Series after scoring 249 runs and taking 11 wickets. (Agencies)
