The team showed character, says Dhoni

0

New Delhi: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said that the players showed character through their performances in the ongoing five-match ODI series after the disastrous tour of England in the not-too-distant past.

“I’m glad we’re the winning side, it’s really good. Well of course the series in England wasn’t a good one for us, but the team showed character not to lose temper and still be sociable on the field,” Dhoni said after India beat England by eight wickets to take a two-nil lead in the series, here.

Though there was no devil at the Ferozeshah Kotla track, Dhoni said he would have preferred a little more turn.

“The pitch was a bit too placid, I’d prefer a bit more turn. I think a turning wicket is a sporting track in India. But this was a good ODI wicket.”

Asked if he is looking for a whitewash, Dhoni said,” For us it’s all about winning one game at a time, improving ourselves as cricketers, especially with youngsters in the side.”

As far as the result was concerned, the India skipper felt the start was crucial to his team’s success.

“We needed a good start, Vinay (Kumar) and Praveen (Kumar) gave us that with early wickets. We never let them get a partnership together.”

Dhoni did not not forget to praise Virat Kohli (112 not out) and Gautam Gmbhir (84 not out) for their efforts.

“I think Gautam played brilliantly, and Virat, we all know, is a strokeplayer once he sets in. Gautam’s innings at No. 3 was crucial, the ball was still moving a bit when he got in.”

England skipper Alastair Cook said they would need to pull up their socks to make a comeback in the series.

“We would like to do everything differently. We got a lot of 30s and 40s (today) but we know that doesn’t win a game,” Cook said.

He felt his team is not able to replicate the performance of the warm-up games in the ongoing series.

“We prepared well in the practice games, but we haven’t translated that to the main games. We need to score more runs, and our fielding wasn’t quite to standard.

“Virat and Gambhir showed us how it’s done. Credit to the way they played.”

Man of the Match, Kohli said he was desperate to perform in front of his home crowd.

“It’s especially satisfying playing at my home ground. I was really keen to perform at my home ground, really happy with the way I batted,” Kohli said. (PTI)

Maoists looking for bases in Assam: Gogoi

0

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said the Maoists were trying to establish bases in the state with active support from various groups and organisations aimed at destabilising the region.

“It is a fact that the Maoists are there in Assam and trying their best to set up strongholds,” the chief minister told journalists.

Gogoi was reacting to confessional statements made by the four Maoists arrested by police over the weekend in east Assam.

“There are people, including various over-ground groups, who are supporting the Maoists. The whole idea is to destabilise the state,” the chief minister said.

Gogoi said the government was aware of the Maoists’ plans to strike terror and penetrate deep into the state.

“We are very much concerned and hence taking all steps to thwart their designs,” the chief minister said.

Police arrested four youths in the east Tinsukia district on Sunday on charges of having Maoist links.

“There are several insurgent groups in Assam that have direct Maoist links. We cannot divulge all he details now,” the chief minister said.

There were fears that the Maoists were trying to penetrate into Assam’s tea plantations taking advantage of the poor living conditions and grievances of the workers.

Reports said the Maoists from east India may have forged links with a ragtag Assam-based group called the All Adivasi National Liberation Army, whose cadres were drawn from the state’s tea workers’ community.

The Maoists were also eyeing to create trouble in Bhutan and were hence keen to set up bases in Assam to stage hit-and-run guerrilla strikes in the adjoining Buddhist nation, reports said.

Bhutan witnessed a pro-democracy agitation in the 1990s with a section of Nepali-speaking residents in its southern parts rising in revolt. The crackdown that followed led thousands of Nepali-speaking people from southern Bhutan to flee to Nepal.

Now an estimated 100,000 people are sheltered in relief camps. There are reports that the Maoists have been drawn from the aggrieved refugees now based in Nepal. (IANS)

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, who has won the Australian and US Opens as well as Wimbledon this year remains comfortably ahead despite taking time off to rest a back injury and is slated to remain world NO 1for the rest of the year..

While in most of the districts the medical stores have remained closed for most part of the day, those in Tinsukia district remained closed for two hours. Regional clout wanes as Spain puts jobs over politics

0

BARCELONA: Voter anxiety over jobs will help sweep Spain’s right-leaning People’s Party into power in November’s general election with a victory so resounding it will muffle the clout of power-broker parties from the Catalan and Basque regions, according to polls.

Surveys forecast an outright win by the People’s Party, or PP, on November 20 as voters blame the Socialists for unemployment and unmanageable debt and face the enormity of painful spending cuts to ward off the euro zone debt crisis.

In previous legislatures minority Socialist or PP governments have had to strike deals with Basque and Catalan parties — known as nationalist parties — in order to get laws passed.

Playing kingmaker, the Basques and Catalans won concessions for their regions — funding for local projects and financial autonomy — despite their relatively small number of seats in Parliament. The largely opaque negotiations on such deals raised hackles in the rest of the country.

Backed by voter anger at the Socialists, the PP is seen picking up votes around the country, even in Spain’s richest and most populous region Catalonia where it has historically lagged in popularity behind the Socialists and the main Catalan nationalist party Convergencia i Union, or CiU.

”Nationalism has taken a back seat to the economy,” said Juan Diez, analyst at Barcelona-based think-tank IBEI.

Catalonia has its own distinct language and culture and capital city Barcelona is both hip and historic, proud of being a hub for designers and foodies.

But foremost in the minds of the electorate are jobs, not nationhood, especially in Catalonia where the local character is famous for its pragmatism as well as being different.

The PP has never won more than 23 per cent of the vote in Catalonia, but could go over 24 per cent on November 20, gaining two or three more seats that will help it control the national Parliament in Madrid.

The electorate’s faith in the PP, or its disenchantment with the Socialists after almost eight years in power, is such that PP leader Mariano Rajoy is expected to win despite his vague policy outline on the economy.

Polls show most Spaniards see the PP as the better captain during an economic crisis and the best equipped to tackle a 21 percent unemployment rate, the highest in the European Union.

”We all have to shoulder the burden. No-one likes cuts but, if there is no money, what can we do?” said Raquel Vilalta, a 79-year-old former piano teacher from Barcelona. (Reuters)

Saina eyes first Super Series title of the year

0

NEW DELHI: As the season is drawing to a close, Saina Nehwal would look to end the Super Series title drought when the Denmark Open gets underway at Odense with the qualifiers on Tuesday.

World number four Saina had won three Super Series titles – Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong – besides winning the Commonwealth Games and India Open Grand Prix gold last year.

However, this year, Saina has won only a Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold title, besides finishing runner-up at Malaysia and Indonesia and the Indian will try to better her record when she open her campaign against Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand.

Fourth seed Saina has a 3-0 record against Porntip and is expected to cross the first hurdle without much fuss. However, her progress in the elite event would depend on how she faces the likes of Dane Tine Baun, Japan’s Eriko Hirose and world number one Yihan Wang of China.

While Saina had a reasonable draw, P Kashyap’s wretched luck with the men’s singles draw continued as he has been pitted against world number one Chong Wei Lee in his tournament opener.

Mumbai shuttler Ajay Jayaram, who reached the quarters in his debut World Championship this year, will take on Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in the first round.

Commonwealth Games gold medallists Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will take on Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao of Singapore in the Women’s doubles competition.

Jwala will also pair with V Diju and take on eighth seeds Michael Fuchs and Birgit Michels of Germany in the mixed doubles event.

Aditi Mutatkar, Anand Pawar, RMV Gurusaidutt and men’s doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas will play in the qualifying round tomorrow.

Denmark Open is one of the five Super Series tournaments, which has been promoted as Premier event with a minimum prize fund between $350,000 and $400,000. The other Premier tournaments are All England Open, China Open, Indonesia Open and Korea Open. (PTI)
