AGARTALA: A Youth Congress activist died and at least 45 people including Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman were injured in sporadic clashes between security forces and activists of opposition party at Post Office Chowmuhani on Monday evening.
The agitated Congress supporters stormed into the West post station and went on rampage to take revenge Sunday’s incident. They also set on fire three police vehicles leading to a warlike situation at Post Office Chowuhani, heart of the city.
Finding no other alternative, police opened fire on the agitators leaving at least 25 injured. Besides, 20 more were injured in clashes between security personnel and Congress supporters.
As per the schedule, hundreds of Congress leaders, workers and supporters on Monday gathered at Congress Bhavan premises and took out a rally protesting the Sunday’s incident in which over 80 persons injured. Though the rally was started with peaceful note, it turned into worst when security forces clashed with agitators broke out. To bring the situation under control, police opened fire at agitators resulting in 24 agitators and one TSR jawan suffered bullet injures. Earlier, 20 Congress supporters were injured in clashes in and around the area.
In the clashes, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Addl SP Kamal Chakraborty and Officer in Charge (OC) of West police station were injured and shifted to the GBP Hospital.
All the injured were shifted to GBP Hospital where one Papan Saha (24), a Youth Congress activist succumbed to his injuries. An alert has been sounded in the capital town to avert any kind of untoward incident.
Meanwhile, Congress frontal organizations- Youth Congress, NSUI and Seva Dal have jointly called a 12-hour bandh on July 13 next.
Announcing this to media Youth Congress state unit president Sushanta Chowdhury on Monday said that the YC, NSUI and Seva Das would stage demonstration in all the 60 Assembly constituencies on Wednesday.
“Our main agenda is to focus the police atrocities on non-violent movement in which over 90 Congress workers got injured”, he said.
Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans resorted to lathi charge on Congress supporters who had gathered at MBB College in protest against CET for admission in Tripura Medical College (TMC). As many as 80 agitators and 11 scribes were injured in the lathi charge on Monday.
