Ex-MLA Suchiang passes away

SHILLONG: Former legislator Herbert Suchiang (86) passed away following a cardiac arrest in a hospital in Guwahati on Sunday afternoon.
The late Jaintia Hills leader’s son Erwin Sutnga informed over phone that he was unwell for quite some time and was admitted in a Guwahati hospital a few days ago.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters and four grandchildren.
He contested and won the Assembly polls from Raliang constituency in 1988 and was appointed as cabinet minister by the then chief minister DD Lapang.
He also functioned as the chief executive member after he was elected to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) in 1999.
In 2001, he was elected as the chairman of JHADC.
Before his entry into politics, he was a member of the Indian Audit and Accounts Services.
Suchiang was also a close associate of late PA Sangma.
