TURA: For a man who started out as a teacher before moving on to the political field where he mastered the arts, the little man of big politics never forgot his bearings. He returned to gift his fellow citizens the essence of education on the most important day of his life – his 64th birthday on Thursday.
The Higher Secondary School of the PA Sangma Foundation was inaugurated by his youngest daughter and Union Minister of State Agatha K Sangma at Dakopgre before a gathering of the who’s who of Tura town.
Agatha said that there is an urgent need for philanthropists in our society and compared the method of contributions between two different states.
She pointed out that in India we tend to revolve our wealth within one’s family, trust and temples whereas in the west maximum effort is put into educational research.
She revealed that only educational research and policies based on its findings can build a better nation and a future for our generation.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma also spoke on the occasion of his 64th birthday. He revealed that the school is a gift for the future generation of the Garo people.
“I worked as a teacher for 14 years and I loved every moment of it. Today this is my gift for my beloved people. I want our children- the future of Garo Hills – to excel,” said Sangma.
The school has been started within a short span of a few months and already boosts of ninety students in Class XI with a full strength of ten lecturers.
One of the highlights of the inauguration was the opening of the music academy by the Foundation. The academy will soon be imparting training for young toddlers in the art of playing the piano, guitar, drums and traditional instruments.
A demo in the art of music was presented during the inauguration by renowned music teacher Ausilya R Marak who strummed away on the keys of the electronic piano.
The Foundation has already initiated a school for tailoring and weaving for young artisans.
The school plans to start the commerce section of the college next year. In 2013 a full degree course would begin and by 2016 the Foundation aims to have its own university.
