AGARTALA: The Lokayukta would be functional in Tripura soon wherein every stakeholder in the administration starting from Chief Minister to Gram Panchayat member, said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar here on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said that the Lokayukta Bill which was passed in the Assembly long back was waiting for approval from the President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil.

The approval came way back in May, 2010. However, the state waited for any potential Act from the centre in this line which is the actual cause of the delay in not operationalising the Act till date, said Sarkar.

However, putting it in action right before the coming Assembly election has indeed put some questions in several quarters.

Referring to the issue, Sarkar said, “We will implement it very soon”.

“One can’t foretell what will the face of the country the day next standing on such a critical time.

One has to ensure accountability of the government”, added he.

The Chief Minister also said that if the central government passes any specific Act in this discipline, the state government would made amendments in the existing rules if necessary.

The Lokayukta Bill was passed in the Assembly way back in 2008.

The rules for this Act haven’t been formulated till date as well.

The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council was also initially kept outside the coverage of Lokayukta while a mist prevailed over the status of Chief Minister.

Dispelling all confusions, the Chief Minister stated that all stakeholders in administration would be covered by the new Lokayukta Act.

However, Chief Minister didn’t point out anything specifically regarding the coming structure of the Lokayukta and people holding chairs in it.

Sources said, the Chief Minister had has a meeting with Leader of Opposition Ratan Lal Nath and Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath on the issue over the formation of Lokayukta.
