JOWAI: Hundreds of local residents of Wapung shnong and Wapungskur village besides those from surrounding villages availed free medical checkup at a two- day District Health Mela organised by the District Health Centre jointly with the National Rural Health Mission(NRHM) at Wapung Pamra Public Health Centre (PHC) under Khliehriat sub-Division on Tuesday.
The Health Mela was inaugurated by the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chairman O. Kyndait, in the presence of the Chairman of the Health Society who is also the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner T.Dkhar, SDO (Civil) Khliehriat Sub- Division, Khliehriat, C. Laloo and District Medical & Health Officer, Dr. F Gatphoh besides Additional DM&HO W. Dkhar, Staff of the Health department from Jowai and Khliehriat Sub-Division.
In his inaugural speech Kyndait said awareness should be catered to the people first in order to make them aware of the benefits of health care. Only after catering such information, then our people will respond to the Health Mela. Lack of awareness has kept the people away from the PHC”, he said.
Earlier, Dr. Gatphoh in her introductory Speech, informed that Health Mela is conducted for creating Health Awareness to avail special treatment during the Mela and also to remind the people that there do exist a PHC in their area where they can avail treatment without spending much.
She also appealed to the the public to cooperate with the staff especially during Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) which will commence on February 20 and April 2nd, 2012.
