Nagaland assures to arrest attackers on tea estate

Jorhat (Assam): Nagal-and police on Tuesday assured their counterparts in Assam that those responsible for the attack on Naganijan Tea Estate earlier this week would be arrested.

This was decided at a peace meeting between officials of both states and students organisations held at the estate, which is located in the Assam-Nagaland border of Jorhat district, according to official sources.

The All Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (AATTSA) had organised a week-long blockade of roads leading to Nagaland from Jorhat district to protest against the attack on the local villagers of the estate allegedly by Naga youths earlier this month.

AATTSA had withdrawn the strike yesterday following assurances of action from the administration.

At today’s meeting, a decision was taken to maintain status quo in the area and restrain any encroachment by people from one state into another’s territory.

The meeting also decided that five members will be nominated from both states which will function as a peace committee. It will monitor the situation and take necessary steps for confidence build up among the public.

The district administration of Mokokchung in Nagaland will take immediate steps for removal of armed personnel from Saringyim village of Nagaland.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the AATTSA, the All Assam Students Union (AASU), and 24 officials including Jorhat SP Sunjukta Parashar and Mokokchung SP Sonia Singh. (PTI)
