SHILLONG: The strive to preserve and conserve catchment areas and aqua lives was witnessed among the people of Jaintia Hills who recently came forward and unanimously created a committee ‘Synjuk Iada Dohum 5 Shnong’ under the ‘Save Fish, Save River’ Campaign led by the KSU Mawryngkneng Circle.
Around five villages of Jaintia Hills extended their support to this campaign on Saturday last while maintaining that protection of the rivers and aqua lives can benefit them in various ways besides providing employment opportunities.
The five villages- Bamkamar, Nongkhroh, Umkharai, Nonglatem and Umkharia came up with the cause at a gathering held at Umkhariawhich was attended by Mawryngkneng KSU president Wallambok Kharsati, Rangbah Shnong of all the five villages besides local residents.
The members present at the gathering has unanimously decided to preserve the aqua lives at Umrut River and other rivers in this area and at the same time strictly warned all those malicious people who intend to ripe their benefits at the cost of other living species.
“If found, they will be punished while paying a fine of Rs 50,000 per head”, Kharsati said.
Meanwhile, the recently formed committee— ‘Synjuk Iada Dohum 5 Shnong” included Rangbah Shnong of Nonglatem M.Shangpung as the chairman, Edwin Challam from Bamkamar as Secretary and Carmelo Nongrum, the Rangbah Shnong Nongkhroh as Treasurer and the Rangbah Shnong and Secretaries of the five villages as members of the committee.
