SHILLONG: Double strike by Jackichand Singh took Royal Wahingdoh FC to the top of the points table on Sunday.

Trailing by a goal, Jackichand scored on either half of the match as Wahingdoh beat Aizawl FC 2-1 in a Final Round match of the I-League Second Division in Gangtok.

With 16 points in their kitty from eight matches, Wahingdoh are two points ahead of second-placed ONGC and lead United Sikkim by three points.

“Its a very important win considering the fact that we were trailing at one stage,” RWFC coach Carlton Chapman said.

“We don’t want to be in a situation where we have to depend on other teams to help us qualify.

“Hence its important that we need to maintain the winning streak,” Chapman added.

Earlier, bottom-ranked Aizawl FC took the Royals by surprise going into the lead in the 11th minute. However, Wahingdoh struck back four minutes later after a long through ball by Chencho to Jackichand found the nets.

Undeterred by the counter attack, Aizawl regrouped to dominate for rest o the first half.

Crossing over, the Jackichand-Chencho combination swung into action again as Wahingdoh went ahead in the 48th minute. Chencho in the right flank crossed one to Jackichand who made no mistake to put it home. Wahingdoh squandered a couple of opportunities to increase the lead thereafter.

It was a good day for Wahingdoh who would also take delight from Kalighat’s performance against Mohammedan SC.

One of the top contenders in the event so far, Mohammedan SC were restricted to 13 points from eight matches after they were held to a goalless by sixth-placed Kalighat on Sunday.
