Girl assaulted

SHILLONG: Few unidentified school girls assaulted one Sweata Devi at Lady Veronica Lane, Laitumkhrah late in the evening recently. It is learnt that the girls had even threatened the victim with dire consequences. Police said that according to the FIR filed by the victim, the girls are school students and their faces were covered with scarf when they perpetrated the crime. The victim is a resident of Gora Line area of the city.

Workshop on linguistics

The inaugural function of the Second Workshop of the People’s Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) under the chairmanship of Prof. Ganesh Devy, founder, Bhasha Research Centre, Baroda, will be held at the NEHU New Guest House on May 4. The two day meeting of the PLSI has been convened in collaboration with the Departments of English, Khasi and Linguistics in NEHU. Participants from seven states will take part in the workshop. The Minister for Urban Affairs, Ampareen Lyngdoh, will be the chief guest at the function and the Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. A. N. Rai will be the guest of honour.

Laying of foundation stone

The laying of the foundation stone ceremony for the construction of the office building of the Chief Engineer water Resources Department will be held on May 8 at the office of the Executive Engineer (WR) Fruit Garden, Shillong. A.L .Hek, Minister of Water Resources Department will be the chief guest for the occasion.

Accidents

Two vehicles travelling in the opposite direction were involved in an accident at Pomlahier under Mawryngkneng Block, East Khasi Hills early Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, a driver of a Maruti 800 (MLO5D-1828) travelling towards Jowai from Shillong sustained injuries when the vehicle had a head on collision with a truck (ASO1 – 5158).

May Day observed
