TURA: Students from the Rajabala Higher Secondary School damaged school property and attempted to set the building on fire in protest against the managing committee’s refusal to reinstate the suspended lady principal of the institute.

The angry students have been protesting since the last one week demanding that the committee reinstate former acting principal, Sarotibala Hajong to her post. The committee’s refusal to do so angered the students who gathered in large numbers and attacked the school even as the teachers fled the scene.

The youngsters broke chairs and tables and other infrastructure of the institute condemning the managing committee which had recently appointed a new principal Haranul Rashid.

The committee had previously appointed Sarotibala Hajong to the post of acting vice principal after she won a case in the High Court against the candidature of another teacher. She was subsequently overseeing the school matters when the committee decided to appoint Haranul Rashid to the post.

It is learnt that the committee placed Sarotibala Hajong under suspension after she refused to sign the papers of students who had cleared the secondary level and were due for promotion to the higher secondary level. She contended that since the committee had appointed Haranul Rashid the signature on the papers ought to have been from the new school head and not the acting principal. The students had rallied in support of the outgoing principal and demanded the committee to bring her back which was refused leading to the attack on the school on Monday.
