SHILLONG: Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Wednesday introduced a Bill in the Assembly to relax the educational qualification of candidates applying for the post of constables under the armed branch of the Meghalaya police.

As per the Meghalaya Police (Amendment) Bill, 2012 tabled in the House, any aspirant who has passed class nine from a recognized school will be eligible to apply for the post of a constable.

The previous minimum qualification to apply for the post was matriculation. The Home Minister said that the State Security Commission recommended this with an aim to address the huge unemployment problem in the State apart from ensuring that the unemployed youth in the interior areas do not get attracted to militancy and crime.
