SHILLONG: A Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Congress legislator and former Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo, hanged himself at the legislator’s official residence near Hotel Pinewood in the city on Thursday morning.

Chising S Marak (30), a bachelor, who was a resident of Bolsalgre in South Garo Hills, was attached with the former Speaker for the past two years.

East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang, informed that police have not been able to detect any foul play in the suicide, but added that they would wait for the post mortem report before arriving at a conclusion.

Kharkrang also informed that Marak’s family members had requested for exemption of post mortem.

“We however declined to accept the request since we do not want to take any chances,” the SP said.

Kharkrang also informed that police have recovered a ‘suicide note’ from the spot.

In the note, the PSO sought pardon of the MLA and stated that he was taking the drastic step due to personal reasons.

“We are yet to verify whether the letter was actually written by the PSO,” Kharkrang said.

The SP also said that Danggo was not present in the quarter as he was residing elsewhere.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Danggo said, “I was out of station from the 8th of this month and arrived here today. I have heard about the incident but have neither heard about nor seen the suicide note.”

He added that he does not use his official residence since he is staying in his own house at Rynjah.
