SHILLONG: Three under trial prisoners (UTPs) of Williamnagar District Jail in East Garo Hills made a failed attempt to escape from the jail.

According to police, the three UTPs – Deben Marak, Jandy Arengh and Predickson Sangma – planned a jailbreak on the night of September 30.

It was informed that the UTPs got hold of a hacksaw which they had probably picked up from the construction site carried out by the PWD inside the barrack and cut the window bar. Two long ropes made out by tying the bed sheets were also recovered.

When contacted, Director General (Prisons) Kulbir Krishan said the matter has been taken up with the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of the district and the jail authorities have been instructed to tighten security to prevent such attempts in future.

He also stated that the PWD has been asked to speed up the construction and ensure proper placement and management of construction tools.

“With the ongoing controversy in Shillong, I could not personally go to Garo Hills and inspect the whole thing but I am trying to ascertain the details of the jailbreak attempt,” Krishan said.
