SHILLONG: Even after two years of the foundation stone laying for the construction of the Umjaiur Mawkohlew Water Supply Scheme by then Urban Affairs minister FS Cajee, the project is yet to see the light of the day.
The implementation of the project was handed to the PHE department at a total cost of Rs 66.71 lakh.
The foundation stone was laid by Cajee in 2010 with a promise to make water supply available by Christmas of 2010.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the KSU Mawlai Circle and Umjaiur Unit on Monday inspected the source from which water was said to be pumped to supply water to the block and found that the water pump that the Electrical Division of the PHED had placed was missing. Besides, the reservoir constructed for this purpose has been filled with dirt, garbage and other unwanted substances.
According to an RTI filed by the KSU recently, it was found that one of the contractors working on the water pump, K Lyngdoh, had issued a report to the PHED stating that all work pertaining to the pump has been completed, but the ground reality says otherwise, the KSU said.
“The lack of concerns of the contractors and negligence of the local MLA has caused so much trouble to the people,” KSU Mawlai Circle president Donboklang Lyngdoh said here on Monday.
Moreover, during the inspection, the KSU members along with the members of the Seng Longkmie and Seng Samla Shnong Mawkohlew found out that around 14 water platforms have been covered with slabs and remained unused without any pipelines.
The KSU had also apprised the PHED of the matter in September following which the department had sought time till September 30 to sort out the problem.
“But October has set in, and nothing is being done in this regard,” Lyngdoh lamented.
The KSU president also reiterated that negligence of the local MLA and the PHED has irked and angered the people of Mawkohlew.
