APUWJ, APC seek status of scribe attack case

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and the Arunachal Press Club (APC) have called upon the state government to clarify the status of July 15 Tongam Rina shooting case.

Rina, an associate editor of a local English daily, was shot from behind in front of her office by unidentified miscreants.

Following failure of the state police to make any breakthrough in the incident, the case had been handed over to the CBI.

There are contradictory reports from different quarters in this regard.

While some sources claimed that the CBI had declined to accept the case, there was no intimation to this effect to both the Press bodies. Even IGP Sanjay Baniwal, who had assured to inform about the status of the case, had not provided anything.

During an hour-long discussion with the editors, publishers and representatives of both bodies on November 10 last, the IGP had however clarified that the process of taking over the case by the CBI is lengthy.

When contacted yesterday, the IGP informed, ‘We are yet to receive any official communiqué in this regard and on receipt of the same it would be made known.’

Capital Superintendent of Police Surender Kumar also conveyed the same message.

The confusing situation is creating a lot of misgivings, and therefore the APUWJ and the APC today exhorted the state government to issue clarification immediately. (UNI)
