Guwahati: Accusing the ruling Congress of indulging in corruption and failing to control ethnic violence and inflation, opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Monday said it was confident of a good result in the upcoming panchayat polls in Assam.

“Our preparations are on at full swing for panchayat polls. For first phase of the polls, selection of candidates have been completed and they will be filing their nominations on January 2,” AGP President and former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta told reporters here.

Asked about the number of seats the party expected to win, Mahanta refrained from giving a direct reply and said “we are confident of a good show.” The panchayat elections in Assam will be held in three phases on January 30, February 6 and February 12, 2013.

“Congress government has engaged in massive corruption and mismanagement. It has failed to moderate inflation, douse ethnic tension and act against crime on women.

“People of Assam are fed up of rampant illegal immigration. No action has been forthcoming regarding update of the National Register of Citizens,” Mahanta said. (PTI)
