Fire in Third Secretariat building, records lost

SHILLONG: A major fire broke out in the Third Secretariat building here in the wee hours of Monday.

The fire destroyed at least three rooms including a strong room of the District Transport Office containing cash and tax records.

Several important records of the Megahalaya transport department were also feared destroyed in the fire, sources said.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that the police are investigating into the incident and efforts are being made to ascertain the cause of the fire.

The fire engulfed the concrete building at around 1.30 am on Monday.

According to Kharkrang, the police department is seeking the help of the forensic

department to establish the cause of the fire and into investigate the incident.

It was learnt that the guard, B Shah, was not present in the office when the fire broke out.

The Third Secretariat also houses important government offices like the Electricity Commission and the Information Commission.

Police have not ruled out any foul play in the incident.
