SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Wednesday observed its 35th Anniversary in the city and paid tributes to their former leaders by laying bouquets and wreaths as a sign of remembrance of the struggle of the Union in the past 35 years.
The day was also marked by the cleaning of the KSU memorial which was constructed 10 years ago during the 25th Anniversary of the Union.
“We have a long way to go and we need to work together with the general public in eradicating influx which is on the rise in the State,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said.
Khyriem termed influx as a menace and said that many of the Union’s past leaders and members have lost their lives fighting for this cause. The KSU reiterated their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system at the earliest, and warned of intensified agitation if the new government failed to accede to their demands.
Urging the new generation of the Union members to strive forward with their cause, NESO chairman and former KSU leader Samuel Jyrwa said the present members and leaders of the Union should come forward and honour those lives that have been lost to the cause by successfully eradicating the menace of influx.
Also present on the occasion were former KSU leaders including Hamlet Dohling, Rangdajeid Kharpuri, Danny Khyriem and others.
