SHILLONG: Despite having stepped into the 21st century, Meghalaya is still beset with problems that stem from superstitious beliefs in the existence of Menshohnoh (cut throats), or keepers of U Thlen, (a mythical serpent that thrives on human blood), and it seems that the police and the district administration are struggling to contain the menace with sporadic cases being reported from parts of Khasi Hills.

The incident on Monday at Mawryngkang village in east Khasi Hills where a large mob attacked and set ablaze the house of a businessman Tremlin Nongsiej indicates that the belief in Menshohnoh is still rooted deep inside the psyche of the Khasi population despite legal actions being taken by the police.

The Shillong Times on Tuesday spoke to people from different backgrounds and sought their opinion on the steps that need to be taken to overcome the superstition.

Additional District Magistrate DM Wahlang spoke on the need for wider dissemination of information that Menshohnoh are mere superstitious beliefs.

While admitting that it is not an easy task to remove the stigma of Menshohnoh, Wahlang reiterated that Menshohnoh is only a myth.

“People should analyze things and remove any misconception,” he said.

Chancellor Father John said that the church is trying to educate people and followers of Christianity have to be strong in their faith, while adding that Menshohnoh is contrary to what Christianity believes.

“We also preach people in church about this issue,” he added.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang also expressed his concern over such incidents and warned that police would take stringent action in this regard.

“Enough is enough and we will not accept the argument that it was the decision of the Dorbar to attack the house of anyone who is allegedly practicing witchcraft,” Kharkrang added.

Cabinet Minister Prestone Tynsong stressed on the need for public awareness on the matter. He also said that there is no proposal so far on any bill under which legal action can be taken against those who attack people alleging them to be Menshohnoh.
