Goalpara (Assam): A person was killed and his wife critically injured by heavily-armed miscreants pn Thursday in Assam’s Goalpara district where violence has claimed six lives so far this week. Police said three heavily-armed persons attacked a person in Dariduri Tillapara village and killed him on the spot and critically injured his wife.
The injured was admitted to Goalpara Civil Hospital. The indefinite curfew clamped in Forest Gate and Rakshisini police station areas of the district was relaxed on Thursday for eight hours from 9 am.
The curfew was clamped after four people were killed on Monday’s mob violence and police firing following the recovery of the body of a missing 50-year old cowherd in the Mailapathar area near Rakshashini forest.
Members of Asom Sankhyalagu Sangram Parishad staged a dharna in front of Goalpara deputy commissioner’s office during the day demanding inquiry into the recent violence and adequate compensation to the victims’ families. The protestors also submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor J B Patnaik in this regard.
Meanwhile, Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) on Thursday took suo moto cognisance of the recent violence in Assam’s Goalpara district in which six people have died so far. A division bench of AHRC, comprising its chairman Justice (Retd) A H Saikia and member Tarun Phookan, has initiated the case based on media reports. It issued notice to Assam Chief Secretary N K Das to conduct an inclusive inquiry into the incident through an additional chief secretary. The commission has also directed that the report be submitted within 45 days of receipt of the notice.
The division bench took up yet another suo-moto cognisance and issued notice to the chief secretary to conduct an inquiry into a media report that around 2582 people, including a large number of primary school students, of several villages in Doboka area of Nagaon district were affected after using water from wells and tubewells contaminated with fluoride.
