SHILLONG: Impressed with the bio digester toilet technology developed by the Defence Research and Developmental Organisation (DRDO), Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that implementation of the technology in the State can provide a solution to the sanitation problem.

A presentation on the technology was made to the Meghalaya Chief Minister in New Delhi on Thursday.

Dr Sangma, however, said that the DRDO would have to come up with a formal proposal to implement the technology in the State.

The DRDO has come up with innovative technology for sanitation which can replace the convention septic tanks model of sanitation by innovative bio-digester tanks using anaerobic micro organisms which is superior but cheaper than the septic tank model.

“Proper implementation would be the key to success of this innovative technology,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister also said that there is a the need have an MOU signed between State Government, DRDO, Centre for Innovation in Public Systems (CIPS), Hyderabad along with FICCI as the implementing partner during the initial phase of the project.

He also said that there is a need to identify blocks and cover villages under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSP), with special focus on urban areas by devising policies.
