SHILLONG: The Union Ministry of Water Resources has earmarked a total amount of Rs 1 crore for the flood control management project in Mylliem area.

“We have already received an amount of Rs 50 lakh as the first installment of the project. The tender for the project has already been floated,” Mylliem constituency legislator Ronnie V Lyngdoh informed here on Friday.

Lyngdoh however informed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this project was prepared by the Water Resources department adding that the DPR was then submitted to the Union Ministry for its approval.

“I am happy that the project has been finally sanctioned by the Ministry. I am hopeful that this project will provide some respite to the people of his constituency which has been badly hit by the flood problem during the rainy season for the past many years,” Lyngdoh said.

Meanwhile, the Rangbah Shnong of Madan Iing Syiem (one of the village in Mylliem constituency which is frequently hit by flood) Hamphel Khyriem said that there are quite number of villages in the constituency who are located near Umjleng River and Umtong Syiem River which use to be badly hit by flood problem for the past many years.

“The worst flood which hit in the area was way back in 2001. There was a hue and cry among the villagers since the flood destroyed many of the agricultural land and houses. Even in 2011, there was a major flood in the area even though it was not as bad as it was in 2001,” Khyriem said.

After seeing this perennial problem, the Rangbah Shnong said that the representatives of the different localities unanimously decided to approach the local MLA to help them to control this problem.

“We are really happy that through the initiative taken by the local MLA that the flood management project have been sanctioned to address to the flood problem in their area,” he added.
