SHILLONG: Cloud storage is going to be much easier now, thanks to the innovation of a 19-year-old computer engineering student, who has created a new file sharing mechanism ‘Right Click’ which makes file sharing simpler. Users can now simply right click on files and press a button called ‘take me everywhere’ and the file is instantly uploaded to the user’s account in his/her Cloud account.

In layman’s terms, cloud storage is simply a term that refers to online space that one can use to store their data. As well as keeping a backup of the files on physical storage devices such as external hard drives, USB flash (pen) drives, etc., cloud storage provides a secure way of remotely storing important data. Online storage solutions are usually provided using a large network of virtual servers that also come with tools for managing files and organizing virtual storage space. Cloud storage is also referred to as online storage or virtual drive.

Sourabh Rao, who is pursuing a Computer Engineering course from the National University of Singapore, worked for nearly four months to develop the system.

Son of NN Rao, Director of the Indian Defence Service who is currently posted in Shillong, Sourabh is in the city on a vacation. On Tuesday he shared his innovation with a group of journalists here.

Sourabh said that each time a file is uploaded in the Cloud account, a progress bar displays the status of the file upload and a share link is generated allowing users to share their files with anyone by sending them the share link.

He told reporters that the product can help a lot as often it is found that people tend to forget their pen drives and hard drives and on some occasions are crippled for want of additional space to store a large number of files.

“The idea came to my mind when I had to transfer lot of files and I would often forget to carry my pen drive,” he said.

Right Click is built on a parallel computing architecture and this means that multiple files can be uploaded simultaneously without wasting time.

According to Sourabh, the elegant interface provided by Right Click makes file sharing easier than ever before. And Unlike other cloud file sharing software, Right Click is very fast and hassle free for downloading and uploading files.

When asked about his future plans, Sourabh said that he wants to make schools and Government offices more efficient through this new system as often people cannot adapt themselves with new IT innovations in Government offices.

“I request everyone, especially students to try this wondrous software and make their lives simpler and secure,” he said.
