SHILLONG: Pressure groups from Ri Bhoi district have opposed the appointment of Pooja Pandey as the new Deputy Commissioner of the district replacing Akashdeep.

The members from the central bodies of Ri Bhoi Youth Development and Social Organisation (RBYDSO), Confederation of Ri Bhoi people (CoRP), Ri Bhoi Students Union (RBSU) and Nongpoh Town Committee on Friday met the MPCC president DD Lapang to take up the matter with the Government.

According to the President of RBYDSO, Lapang asked the delegation to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary in this regard.

The NGOs said that Pandey is new to the district. “The Government should appoint a ‘local’ officer as the new Deputy Commissioner as the district is witnessing several burning issues including border dispute which needs immediate solution, they said

Moreover, the NGOs said holding of elections to the district council and Lok Sabha would be a burden to any Deputy Commissioner who is not acquainted with the traditions, customs and political situation of the State.
