SHILLONG: There is good news for power-starved Meghalaya.
The Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati on Saturday predicted that the State will receive heavy rain next week with hot sunny spells coupled with light winds in between.
A source from the Regional Meteorological Centre said that heavy to very heavy rain would lash the State on Monday and Tuesday.
“It is expected that a heavy rainfall will occur on Tuesday but from Wednesday onwards normal rain will resume and continue till the end of next week,” said the source adding that so far, rainfall has been below normal in the State.
More than half way through monsoon, the State has received comparatively scanty rainfall till now and the rain spells predicted will help in brimming the Umiam dam.
Meanwhile, the temperature during this period is expected to remain between 21 to 23 Degree Celsius. There are also possibilities of isolated thunderstorms in some parts of the State.
“Tura and Garo Hills as a whole will witness moderate to haevy rainfall but temperature will touch 28 Degree Celsius there,” the source said.
Meanwhile, the India Metrological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, has signaled a severe weather warning across the country.
Meghalaya along with Arunachal Pradesh and Assam will experience isolated heavy rainfall from August 25 onwards which will sustain for most of the coming week. The other northeastern states, however, will not be affected.
The northeast, which sees devastating floods every year during the rains, has had a deficient monsoon this year. And with little over a month left for the rainy season to end, it is unlikely that the region will receive enough rain to make up for the backlog.
The rains hit the northeast a few days later than the normal June 5 this year. The normal time of withdrawal of the monsoon is September 30.
