SHILLONG: Malki Sports Club, one of the eight clubs set to participate in this year’s Shillong Premier League, announced their squad through a press release on Tuesday.
The club, founded in 1916, will battle it out with seven other teams in the SPL; the tournament will begin on September 2 at the JN Sports Complex, Polo.
Malki SC will play their first match on September 3 against defending champions Royal Wahingdoh FC.
The team for the current edition of the competition comprises a mix of experienced and promising young players.
Malki finished in the top four of the SPL in 2012, tied on 24 points with Langsning FC, and the team is hopeful of giving a good showing in this year’s edition as well.
Although they did not win the League last year, they could at least celebrate in the fact that Samson Nongrum was named Player-of-the-Tournament.
Inspired by the club’s motto – ‘Sweat Out, Glory In’ – Malki’s players aim to display their talent, skill and strength against their SPL opponents backed by their fans.
The players are under the guidance of head coach Herring Shangpliang and assistant coach Dap Tariang.
Unlike many other clubs, Malki SC have drawn their players solely from Meghalaya, specifically the Khasi-Jaintia region.
After playing RWFC on September 3, Malki will next face Meghalaya Police on September 6, followed by last year’s runners-up Rangdajied United FC on September 11.
The club then receive a one week break before going up against Langsning FC on September 18.
Mawlai SC are their next opponents on September 24, with a match against Pohkseh SS&CC three days later.
