SHILLONG: The UDP has decided to back the implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to regulate the entry of outsiders into the State.
“We have unanimously resolved to endorse the implementation of the ILP system,” UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said after a special meeting of the party convened by its president Dr Donkupar Roy on Tuesday ahead of the crucial all-party meeting of September 5.
He said the party was of the view that the Government cannot overlook the recommendations of the High Level Committee (HLC) on Influx. The HLC had recommended implementation of ILP.
“The committee was constituted at the initiative of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma,” Lyngdoh pointed out adding that one cannot forget that the committee was headed by former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Mathew Lanong and had four Cabinet Ministers as its members.
The UDP working president also said that the committee had representatives from members of prominent organisations, traditional institutions, Chief Executive Members (CEMs) of the three Autonomous District Councils besides members of the civil societies as its members. “This proves that the views of all were taken into consideration before the committee decided to recommend the implementation of the ILP,” Lyngdoh said adding that “the only immediate solution to check this menace of influx of illegal migrants is ILP.”
The UDP will send a five-member delegation to the September 5 all-party meet.
Stating that the party would impress on the need to implement the ILP in the meeting, Lyngdoh said the UDP was hopeful of Government accepting the recommendations of HLC.
