‘Technology has hampered letter writing habits’

SHILLONG: Technology has hampered letter writing habits among the new generation, deplored P K Swain, Postmaster General, North East Circle.

To encourage the letter writing habit, North East Postal Circle organized an award giving ceremony on Friday for letter writing competition for school students.

Speaking on the occasion, Swain said that the habit of letter writing should be inculcated in the students as the technology savvy modern world has significantly brought down this precious habit.

While addressing the students, RG Lyngdoh, Vice Chancellor, Martin Luther Christian University said that letter writing not only keeps individuals in touch with each other but at the same time it promotes language.

A K Mathur, Director, NEPA, while addressing the students insisted that the younger generation should show more interest in writing letters rather than opting for SMSes.

He also exhorted students and school principals to promote philately avidly as hobby as the commemorative stamps bring out along with it the details on the subject including historical and cultural antecedents.

N Shadap, Deputy. Director General, All India Radio was also present. The juries and the principals of the award winning schools were also invited in the function.

Awards were handed to the students from various schools of Shillong by Lyngdoh and Mathur.

Wansuk Myrthong, the first woman from Meghalaya to summit the Mount Everest on May 18 was honoured by the Postmaster General on the occasion.
