MoU to be signed with Canada-based firm
SHILLONG: In an initiative that aims to ensure that people have access to quality meat, the State Government would soon sign a MoU with the government of Alberta Province (Canada) for development of piggeries in the State.
The Canada delegation led by Grant Winton, Senior Director, Trade and Relations, Agriculture and Rural Development, Policy Strategy and Inter-State relations, Government of Alberta, Canada on Saturday held a preliminary discussion with the Chief Minister, Animal Husbandry Minister Deborah C Marak and other senior officials in this regard.
“There is a need to provide quality meat at affordable prices besides ensuring that the meat consumed is free from diseases,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said adding that the government initiative could also aims at motivating local entrepreneurs to invest in the livestock rearing which could prove to be a sustainable livelihood venture for many.
“If our people can rear livestock which will be economically beneficial for them as well as provide them an opportunity to sell quality products which are of high nutritional value, the initiative is worthwhile for the government to embark upon,” Dr Sangma said after meeting the delegation.
Giving details of the proposed initiative Principal Secretary in charge of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department Prashant Naik said, “The structure (of the MoU) would be prepared within a month following which we will sign the MoU with the Canada based firm.”
The signing of the agreement will pave the way for importing new breed of pigs from Canada.
“The initiative would lead enhanced production of pork besides ensuring better quality,” Naik said adding that the Canada-based firm has better management skills when it comes to production of pork.
It may be mentioned that the Centre has revoked the ban on import of pigs.
Earlier, Dr Sangma also pointed out that the quality of pork available remains to be ascertained as no one knows its source.
“It is important to ascertain the source of the meat from where it comes as many diseases are linked to consumption of pork,” the Chief Minister said.
