UK mom gives birth to rare identical triplets

London: In an extremely rare occurrence, a 32-year-old mother in the UK has given birth to three identical baby girls, beating the odds of 200 million to one.

The triplets were born in August at Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, weighing a little over 1.72kg each. Doctors had given Karen Gilbert, mother of the triplets, an option to terminate the pregnancy as they feared the three foetuses could take each other’s fluid and space and might not survive.

The determined parents from Pontypool, South Wales, however, rejected pleas to terminate their girls. The girls named Ffion, Maddison and Paige were formed when a single egg split into three, an extremely rare occurrence.

The trio are now home after spending six weeks in hospital, the report said. “I still feel like someone’s going to tell me I’ve had my time with them now and take them away, said Gilbert. “At first we thought it was one, but at eight weeks I got bad pains. We thought it was a miscarriage but it was three babies fighting for space,” she said. (PTI)

Cop expects burglary, helps deliver baby instead

Washington: A US policeman who went to a house, armed with his gun, expecting to deal with burglary was surprised when instead of thieves he found himself face-to-face with a woman in labour.

Officer Gene Kimpton entered the home in Carrollton, Texas, with his weapon drawn to respond to an unknown emergency. “It was an unknown emergency. I was expecting a burglary in progress or something like that,” Kimpton said.

A young boy guided Kimptom to the bathroom where his mother – who apparently did not realise she was pregnant – was giving birth. “I get the door open, and she is in the process of giving birth! I put gloves on and helped the baby out,” said Kimpton, who has two children of his own.

“Luckily a school resource officer got there and called paramedics and luckily they got there pretty quick,” he said. “It was not what I was expecting in the least bit; but, it was an incredible experience helping a new life into this world,” he told CBS 11 News.

Kimpton said the mother did not panic, but she was definitely surprised by the birth. “She indicated to one of the paramedics that she didn’t realise that she was pregnant…at all,” he said. The mother and the baby boy were taken to Baylor Medical Center at Carrollton and are doing well. (PTI)

Crocodile kills 10-year-old Mexican boy

Mexico City: A 10-year-old Mexican boy was killed by a crocodile that appeared in his village after storm-swollen rivers brought out reptiles in the south of the country, officials said on Monday.

The attorney general’s environmental protection office said 28 crocodiles have been captured in urban areas since tropical storms Ingrid and Manuel lashed opposite coasts of Mexico two weeks ago.

The boy was playing with his 13-year-old brother by a swollen river in the southern state of Oaxaca last Friday when a four-meter long crocodile grabbed the child’s head and dragged him for a few meters before letting go. The giant reptile was captured on Sunday and taken to a national park with a crocodile sanctuary with guards on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. (AFP)

Prince William, Kate to move into Kensigton Palace

London: Prince William and wife Kate Middleton along with their new born son Prince George are set to move into their home at Kensington Palace this week after a 1.5 million pounds overhaul of the property.

But as workmen put the finishing touches to the renovations that lasted for two years, the couple are returning to London to start family life in their first “proper” home. “They can’t wait.

They are so looking forward to getting the place how they want it and being settled,” a friend was quoted as saying by the Daily Express. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to move into the four-storey 20-room apartment 1A, which once belonged to Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II’s sister who died in 2002. (PTI)
