Pak violates ceasefire again

Jammu: Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire again by firing on Indian posts along the LoC in Poonch district, prompting Indian troops to retaliate.

“Pakistani troops fired on Indian posts along LoC in Mendhar sector of Poonch district yesterday”, Defence Spokesman S N Acharya said on Wednesday.

Pakistani troops used small arms and automatic weapons to target positions in Mendhar around 2.30 PM yesterday, he said.

“Our troops retaliated with same calibre weapons and the exchange of firing continued upto 3.30 PM,” he said, adding, “there was no loss or damage to our side in this firing”. (PTI)

Gold, cash robbed from finance company office

Nashik: In a major heist, five armed men dressed in police uniform allegedly decamped with 15 kg gold and Rs three lakh cash from the office of a finance company here, police said. The five men entered the Manappuram Gold Loan office in a busy locality on Nashik road Tuesday evening and first disconnected the CCTVs, telephone lines and siren while holding the staff at gun point, they said. The robbers also seized the mobile phones of employees, before entering the strong room where they robbed about 15 kg gold and Rs 3 lakh cash, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sahebrao Patil said. The robbers then fled after locking all the employees in the strong room and pulling down the shutters of the office. The incident came to light when some customers noticed that the office was closed early and found the shutters down without being locked. The customers and some local people then informed police, following which security personnel rushed to the spot. The locked employees could be released only after police broke the strong room at around 10 PM on Tuesday, the DCP said. The manager of Manappuram Gold Loan office lodged a complaint regarding the robbery with Upnagar Police Station late last night. Meanwhile, the vital exit points of the city have been sealed and Nashik Commissioner of Police Kulwant Kumar Sarangal has set up several police squads which have been conducting an extensive search for the culprits. No arrest has been made so far in connection with the offence, police said. (PTI)

Encephalitis claims 11 lives in 3 days; toll climbs to 330

Gorakhpur: With eleven more children succumbing to encephalitis at BRD Medical College here during past three days, the death toll due to the disease has climbed to 330 in eastern district of Uttar Pradesh this year. Of the 11 deaths, seven deaths occurred on Tuesday at BRD Medical College Hospital. The dead include two children each from Gorakhpur and Kushinagar, and one each from Deoria, Siddharthanagar and adjoining Bihar. According to health officials, as many as 60 fresh encephalitis patients have been admitted to the government hospital here in last 72 hours, taking the total number of admissions since January this year to 1620. Around 172 patients are being treated at different government hospitals at present. (PTI)

Elephant tramples forest guard to death

Erode (TN): A forest guard in charge of anti poaching operations was trampled to death by an elephant in remote Sujilkarai area in the district, officials said. The 35-year-old man had gone deep inside the forest along with his assistant on Tuesday when they noticed the tusker. They tried to run away, but the pachyderm chased them, caught hold of the official and trampled him to death. The assistant managed to escape and informed higher officials, who rushed to the spot with a doctor. The man’s body was later handed over to his relatives. (PTI)

School teacher arrested for molestation bid on student

Bahraich (UP): A school teacher was arrested for allegedly trying to molest a 10-year-old girl inside the school premises in Nanpara area here, police said on Wednesday. According to a complaint filed by the victim’s father, Micheal Yeshu alias Yashudas Baba, teacher and manager of St. Peter Inter college, tried to molest the child but failed as some people suddenly arrived there, they said. A case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 and other sections of the IPC has been registered against him, Deputy Superintendent of Police Aslam Khan said, adding that the accused was arrested on Tuesday. Mobile tower guard found dead

Farrukhabad: A 22-year-old mobile tower guard was found dead with burn injuries in Kachiyana area under Kotwali city police station area here, police said. Body of Mohammad Ikrar with burn injuries was spotted by the locals on Wednesday morning and they informed the police. Superintendent of Police Jogendra Kumar, who rushed to the spot, said that the body has been sent for post mortem examination and his family members in Lakhimpur have been informed. A case has been registered and investigations handed over to the crime branch, the SP added. (PTI)

Girl alleges SI raped her in police station

Khagaria: A Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police has been sent to police lines and a probe ordered against him after a girl alleged that he raped her at a police station in Bihar’s Khagaria district recently, police sources said on Wednesday. Superintendent of Police (SP) Deepak Barnwal transferred SI Satyendra Singh to police lines and and asked the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajiv Ranjan to probe the rape charge against Singh, the sources said. The girl, a native of Marr village, had alleged in a complaint that she was raped by the Singh at Morkahi police station last week where she had gone to record her statement under section 164 of the CrPC before a magistrate in connection with her escapade with her boyfriend about which her family had lodged a case, they said. Meanwhile, the Bihar State Women Commission Member Chandramukhi Devi said that she will go to Khagaria to probe the rape charge against the SI, the sources added. (PTI)
