SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is planning to put up a candidate in Shillong in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
UDP working President Paul Lyngdoh said on Tuesday that in line with the meeting of all the regional parties in Guwahati , UDP would also put up a candidate considering the possible change of guard in Delhi after the elections.
On the move of both the HSPDP and KHNAM to support the candidature of PBM Basaiawmoit, Lyngdoh said that UDP being the largest and recognized regional party in the State, it can play a role in Delhi politics.
“We will have general council meetings of the UDP prior o to making a final decision on fielding a party candidate,” Lyngdoh said.
Congress has already sent the list of four names — sitting MP Vincent Pala, former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope, former Rajya Sabha member OL Nongtdu and Congress leader John Kharshiing — to the AICC for clearance.
The BJP is yet to make its stand clear whether it will put up a candidate or support any candidate.
PCP plea: Meanwhile, the People’s Candidate Forum (PCF) has appealed to all the political parties of the state including Congress not to field any candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Shillong seat
The PCF, in statement said after a series of negotiations HSPDP and KHNAM decided to lend their support to Rev. (Dr.) PBM Basaiawmoit as the PCF candidate.
