Will Modi do it?

There is one way in which Narendra Modi can moderate his image. One of the authoritarian measures taken in Gujarat is prohibition. It dates back to Congress rule in 1960. The restrictions should be abolished. Modi has promised to youth that he will not impose a government which strangles their freedom of choice. Strict laws can only lead to law breaking. Prohibition everywhere has led to smuggling and the emergence of speakeasies. The number of liquor deaths also rise as a result. This is confirmed by government data of 2009-11. Gujarat has total prohibition and ranks fifth in the number of liquor deaths. Modi naturally wishes to promote tourism to create employment and strengthen Gujarat’s economy. Lifting prohibition can give tourism a big boost. The US in the 1930s suffered the ill effects of prohibition and had to scrap it.

Like it or not, a hectic night life is essential for the growth of tourism. But prohibition dampens it. If Narendra Modi lifts prohibition, he will acquire a progressive image which will appeal to youth all over the country. He will be regarded as a champion of free living. But the main reason for lifting prohibition is economic. Agriculture and industry are not enough. The service sector is of great importance. All this however is not a defence of alcoholism and consequent lawlessness. There should be stiff penalties for that.
