SHILLONG: In its effort to provide financial services to the economically active poor and to help alleviate poverty, the Ujjivan Financial Services Pvt Ltd, Mawlai Branch, organised a Social Development Programme at Ferrando Shelter Home, Mawlai Mawroh, on Tuesday.
Ujjivan, one of India’s leading urban micro-finance institutions, has been organising such activities as part of the financial inclusion programme 2013 -2014.
A 180 metre chain-link fencing with a gate as a back entrance for the missionaries was funded by Ujjivan, the construction of which was done by the staff of Mawlai and Police Bazar Branch as a note of dedication and responsibility towards the society.
Addressing the gathering, former Mawlai legislator and Co-Chairman of the Meghalaya State Development and Reformation Commission, FS Cajee, said that by facilitating such programme for the community of Mawlai and also providing safety and security to these homeless children is one kind of an effort which is very rare to be seen.
“Ujjivan has shown its commitment to help build a better society,” he said further urging the member to utilize the assistance and resource fully with the strength to build a better family in all aspect of life.
Program Manager (Meghalaya) of Ujjivan, Innocent Mawkhiew, said, “We have an all-round approach to poverty alleviation. The well-being of a society depends on more than just access to financial services. In the Social Development Programme, our customers are empowered to recommend urgently needed welfare projects in the community. We fully fund and conduct these projects as part of our mission to help build a better life.”
Ujjivan allocates a portion of its profits in running the Social Development Programme. Last year under this initiative, it covered more that 200 branches investing over Rs.47 lakhs and helping over 70,000 beneficiaries across India. In Mawlai, Ujjivan serves over 3000 families and has disbursed loans of over Rs.5 crore.
Also present on the occasion were Headman of Mawlai Mawdatbaki, DR Kharmujai, president of Greater Mawlai People Union (Women Wing) Cordelia Warjri and nearly 130 Ujjivan member and local residents of Mawlai.
